Barrel Life: How Many Rounds Before Your Rifle Needs Rebarreling
The question every precision shooter eventually asks
It does not matter whether you shoot benchrest, F-Class, PRS, or you just take your hunting rifle out twice a year. At some point the groups open up. The barrel that was shooting half-MOA starts throwing shots. And the question is: is it the barrel, or is it you?
Barrel life is not a single number. It depends on cartridge, powder charge, shooting cadence, cleaning habits, and the steel itself. But there are rough ranges that help you plan. If you are past those ranges and your groups have gone sideways, it is probably time to talk to a gunsmith about a rebarrel.
Rough barrel life by cartridge class
Here are the numbers that experienced gunsmiths and competitive shooters generally agree on. These are not guarantees. They are the point at which most barrels start losing precision, not the point at which they become dangerous.
- .22 LR / .17 HMR: 10,000 to 15,000 rounds. Rimfire barrels wear slowly because the pressures are low. Accuracy tends to fade gradually rather than falling off a cliff.
- .223 Remington / 5.56 NATO: 6,000 to 10,000 rounds. A popular civilian and service-rifle round. Moderate powder charge keeps throat erosion in check. Competitive AR-15 shooters often see accuracy degradation around 7,000 rounds.
- 6.5 Creedmoor: 2,000 to 3,000 rounds. The round that took over precision rifle shooting in the last decade. It is efficient and accurate, but it burns powder in a relatively small bore. The throat erodes faster than most people expect.
- .308 Winchester: 3,000 to 5,000 rounds. A moderate round that is relatively easy on barrels. Military match-grade barrels in .308 often hold precision past 4,000 rounds with good maintenance.
- 6mm Creedmoor / 6mm Dasher: 1,200 to 2,000 rounds. The trade-off for the flat trajectory and low recoil of 6mm competition rounds is short barrel life. Competitive 6mm shooters plan for a rebarrel every season or two.
- .300 Winchester Magnum / .338 Lapua: 1,500 to 2,500 rounds. Big cases, big powder charges, and fast throat erosion. The trade-off for the long-range performance is that the barrel wears out faster than most people budget for.
What actually wears out: the throat
When a barrel "wears out," it is rarely the whole barrel. It is the throat. The throat is the section of the barrel just ahead of the chamber where the bullet engages the rifling. This is where powder gases are hottest and most violent. Over hundreds or thousands of rounds, the throat erodes. The leade (the tapered area before the rifling starts) gets longer. The rifling itself gets rounded at the start.
The result is that the bullet takes longer to engage the rifling. The jump from the case mouth to the rifling increases. Gas escapes past the bullet before it seals. Velocity drops. And because the throat is no longer uniform, the bullet enters the rifling inconsistently from shot to shot. That inconsistency shows up as larger groups.
You can measure this with a throat erosion gauge. Or you can measure it by seating your bullets progressively longer to chase the throat as it erodes. Competitive shooters do this routinely, gaining another few hundred rounds before the barrel is truly finished.
Factors that shorten barrel life
The round count ranges above assume normal use. Several things can cut those numbers short:
- Hot shooting. Firing strings of 20 or 30 rounds in quick succession heats the barrel to the point where steel softens. Military full-auto barrels wear dramatically faster than semi-auto match barrels for this reason alone. If the barrel is too hot to touch, you are shortening its life.
- Abrasive cleaning. More barrels are ruined by aggressive cleaning rods than by shooting. A steel cleaning rod dragged through a bore from the muzzle end scratches the crown and the rifling. Use a bore guide, a coated rod, and clean from the breach end whenever possible.
- Wrong cleaning chemicals. Some bore solvents react with steel if left in the barrel too long. Ammonia-based copper removers are the classic culprit. Follow the instructions, do not leave it sitting overnight, and run dry patches until the bore is clean.
- Inconsistent loads. If you reload, loads at the top end of the pressure range accelerate throat erosion. A load that gives you 100 fps more velocity will also give you 30% less barrel life. That is a trade-off, not a free lunch.
Signs it is time for a rebarrel
Round count is a planning tool, not a diagnostic. The real indicators are on the target and on the barrel itself:
- Your groups have opened up by 50% or more. If a rifle that was shooting half-MOA is now grouping at MOA or worse, and you have ruled out optics, ammunition, and shooter error, the barrel is the prime suspect.
- Copper fouling increases sharply. A worn throat roughens the surface and grabs more copper with each shot. If you are cleaning copper out every 50 rounds when it used to be every 200, the throat is likely eroded.
- The throat has moved forward measurably. If you have a throat gauge and the leade has grown by 0.1 inch or more since the barrel was new, the rifling origin has eroded past the point where it can hold consistent precision.
- You see a visible wear ring at the throat. A borescope will show a darkened, roughened area at the throat. If the rifling lands are rounded or gone in the first half inch, that barrel is done.
What a proper rebarrel involves
Rebarreling is not just unscrewing the old barrel and screwing on a new one. A proper rebarrel involves removing the old barrel, truing the action (because most factory actions are slightly out of square), threading and chambering the new barrel to specification, headspacing it, and proof testing.
