Free vs third-party vs custom: choosing the chassis for a precision barrel

When a barrel wears out, the barrel is the cheap part of the decision. The expensive question is what you screw the new barrel into. The action is the component you keep for decades, and the choice between truing the factory action you already own, buying a purpose-built custom action, or replacing the whole rifle determines the budget, the wait, and the accuracy ceiling of the build. Here is how those three roads actually compare, from the bench where the work gets done.

What the action contributes to accuracy

A barrel can only shoot as well as the platform holding it allows. Four things matter. Thread concentricity: the tenon threads on the action face must be square to the bolt axis, or the barrel sits crooked and no amount of chambering fixes it. Locking lug alignment: when the bolt closes, both or all three lugs must bear evenly; a lug bearing on one corner throws the case against the chamber wall on every ignition. Receiver face flatness: a face that is out of square by a couple of thou tilts the entire barrel. Bolt face and raceway consistency: this governs how repeatably the round sits in the chamber.

A factory action coming off a production line is built to a cost, and the tolerances reflect that. Truing, or blueprinting, means a gunsmith puts the receiver in a lathe, faces the front of the receiver true, squares the tenon threads, and laps the lugs so they bear evenly. It is careful, measurable machine work, and it rescues most of what the factory left on the table.

Truing the factory action: the value road

For most shooters with a decent factory rifle, this is the honest answer. A trued Remington 700-pattern or Tikka-pattern action, a good barrel chambered with care, and a rigid stock will shoot with custom builds costing multiples more. The realistic costs in the UK: truing and lug lapping typically runs £150 to £250 of bench time, on top of the barrel work itself. The wait is shorter because no action needs to be ordered. The downside is mechanical: a trued action is still a factory forging with a factory heat treatment and factory metallurgy. You have corrected its geometry, not rebuilt it. It also carries near-zero resale premium; a blueprinted 700 sells as a 700.

One more consideration. If the rifle is your only rifle and the work is being done in the same session as the rebarrel, truing adds days, not weeks, because the receiver is already on the bench. If you are posting the rifle in, ask whether the smith wants to true before threading the tenon; doing it in the wrong order wastes the barrel work.

Custom actions: what the money buys

A dedicated custom action from the established makers arrives with the features a trued factory action cannot retro-fit: integrated recoil lug machined as part of the receiver, a bolt with a fluted body running on a matched raceway, threaded and fluted bolt knob options, and often a built-in 20 MOA rail. The critical difference is that the geometry is right from the start. The threads are cut true to the bolt axis, the lugs bear evenly as manufactured, and the smith chambers to a known-square platform instead of correcting one.

The practical trade is availability and cost. Quality custom actions have long lead times, sometimes several months, and prices that keep climbing. What you get for it is a receiver that will outlast several barrels and holds value on the second-hand market far better than any blueprinted factory action. If you plan to shoot this platform for the next twenty years and burn out a barrel every two or three, amortising a custom action across five barrels makes the arithmetic reasonable.

The third road: replacing the rifle

Sometimes the right call is neither. If your current rifle has a poor reputation for action quality, a sticky extractor, or a proprietary bottom metal that limits magazine options, putting £1,500 of work into it is capital into a declining asset. Sell the rifle while it is shootable and put the money toward a platform with a better starting point. The mistake we see most often is sentimental investment: successive rounds of work on an action that was never going to hold the tolerance, when the same total spend would have bought a fresh start.

A decision sequence that works

Decide the cartridge and the barrel first. If the plan is a moderate cartridge with a standard contour, a trued factory action is entirely sufficient and the savings fund optics or ammunition. If the plan is a hot cartridge, long strings at distance, or you expect to rebarrel repeatedly on the same platform, buy the custom action once. If the current action has known weaknesses that truing cannot address, replace rather than repair.

Whichever road you take, the sequencing is the same: the action decision comes before the barrel order, because tenon thread specs, bolt face diameter and lug configuration all flow from the action, not the barrel.
