Throat Erosion and Accuracy Loss: Diagnosing a Barrel That Is Dying
You can feel a throat-clearing barrel long before you can measure it. The first two shots go into one ragged hole, then the third opens the group, and by shot five you are looking through the scope wondering whether the wind picked up or the rifle gave up. Most shooters blame ammunition at this point, and to be fair that is sometimes the answer. But a barrel that shots fine cold and opens steadily as it warms is telling you something specific: the bore is no longer holding the bullet through a consistent sequence of bumps, and it usually deteriorates from the throat forward. Here is how the failure actually develops, what the numbers look like, and how to decide when accuracy loss is a cleaning issue and when it is steel.
Where barrel accuracy actually dies
Almost all precision barrel wear happens in the first few inches ahead of the chamber, the section gunsmiths call the throat and leade. Hot gas at pressures north of 50,000 psi, carrying unburnt powder particles, erodes this area every shot. The throat slowly moves forward, the leade angle roughens, and the critical thing that breaks is jump consistency. A bullet seated off a crisp, uniform leade enters the rifling the same way every time. A bullet entering a roughened, cracked, fire-cracked throat tips slightly differently each shot, and that difference lands at the target as vertical dispersion. The rifling at the muzzle end, by contrast, is nearly immortal. Crowns get damaged by cleaning rods and accidents, and that is worth checking first, but the steel down the bore itself rarely wears out ahead of the throat. This is why barrel life is counted in rounds, not years: the clock is erosion, and it only ticks when you fire.
Realistic round counts by cartridge class
Barrel life is governed mostly by over-powder-capacity ratios and heat. The numbers below are honest expectations for a barrel used for precision work, where you retire it when it stops holding match-grade groups, not when it will no longer stabilize a bullet at all. A barrel that is worn out for a competitive shooter will still deer-hunt fine for another thousand rounds.
- 223 Remington and 222 class: 4,000 to 8,000 rounds of accurate life. The small case runs cool and gentle.
- 308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor: 2,500 to 5,000 rounds. Both are famously forgiving, which is why they dominate target shooting.
- 6mm Creedmoor, 6 Dasher, 243 Winchester: 1,200 to 2,000 rounds before competitive accuracy fades. Hot, overbore, superb ballistics, and the barrel pays for it.
- 6.5-284 and 284 Win: 1,000 to 1,500 rounds. Benchrest darlings with a known drinking problem for barrels.
- 300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag and faster magnums: 800 to 1,500 rounds. More velocity, more erosion.
- 22-250 at full throttle: 1,000 to 2,000, highly dependent on how it is shot.
Treat these as bands, not promises. Two identical barrels from the same manufacturer can differ by 30 percent, and the way you shoot matters as much as the chambering.
The heat rule that quietly doubles barrel life
Erosion is not linear per round; it accelerates with temperature. A barrel fired twenty shots in five minutes gets far hotter than the same twenty shots spread over an hour, and the hot bore erodes many times faster. Competitive varmint shooters learned this decades ago: the shooters who wait for the barrel to cool between strings consistently report double the accurate life of shooters who run hot magazines through a warm tube. The working rule at our workshop is simple. If you cannot hold your palm on the barrel comfortably for five seconds, it is too hot to fire. On a cold UK range day that means a couple of minutes between five-shot strings. In August prairie-dog sunshine it can mean ten, and the honest answer is to bring two rifles rather than cook one. Chrome-moly and stainless hold up similarly overall, but stainless is somewhat more abrasion resistant while chrome-moly handles heat slightly better; the difference is small enough that it should not drive your choice the way twist rate and contour should.
Distinguishing a dirty barrel from a dying one
Before condemning a barrel, clean it properly and shoot it again with ammunition it has historically liked. Copper fouling accumulates in exactly the throat region where erosion happens, and a badly fouled bore mimics throat erosion almost perfectly: wandering zero, first-shot fliers, groups that open as the bore heats. The diagnostic difference is trend. Fouling loss comes on gradually over a few hundred rounds and largely reverses with a good copper clean. Erosion loss also comes on gradually, but it never reverses, and it keeps getting worse at an accelerating pace. The definitive test is a borescope: a healthy throat shows a uniform, defined leade; a worn one shows fire-cracking, a washed-out throat, and an obvious forward migration of the rifling origin. If you do not own a borescope, a gunsmith who does will check it in minutes. Also rule out the cheap causes first: a damaged crown, loose stock screws, a scope mounting that has shifted, or a cold, soggy day at the range have all sent healthy barrels to the rebarreling queue unnecessarily.
Keeping a round count, honestly
Every serious rifle owner should log rounds fired. It sounds pedantic until you buy a secondhand rifle advertised as barely used and the throat tells a different story. A simple notebook entry per range session is enough: date, round count, ammunition lot. When you approach the lower band of expected life for your chambering, start watching group trend rather than absolute size. Most barrels do not suddenly shoot badly; they slowly require more wind calls and forgiveness than they used to. The competitive rule of thumb is to rebarrel when the barrel can no longer hold the standard you need, not when it is completely shot out, because shooting a barrel fully out can make the rebarreling job harder on some actions and leaves zero margin for a big match.
